What are plantation shutters?

Plantation shutters are the most enduring window treatment money can buy. Solid panels of Australian hardwood or composite, hinged into a frame, with adjustable louvres for light control. They look beautiful from inside and out, they last decades, they add real value to a house, and they handle sun, salt and time better than just about any other option.

We sell Norman's range because Norman builds shutters like furniture — mortise-and-tenon joinery, hardwood frames, properly engineered tilt mechanisms. They cost more than the budget alternatives, and they're worth every dollar. We've never had a customer regret choosing them.

Built like furniture, not flat-packed.

Most shutters on the Australian market are made the same way — mass-produced panels held together with small screws that work loose, screwed corners, and cosmetic finishes. They look fine in year one. By year five, they sag, yellow, and the fittings come loose.

Norman builds shutters the way furniture is built. Two details tell the whole story:

Norman · Woodlore

EasyTilt mechanism

Most shutters have a hidden tilt bar inside the panel that connects to each louvre with tiny screws. Those screws work loose and fall out (and they do) — and when that happens, the louvres won't hold position and the panel has to be replaced. Norman's EasyTilt is an internal gear system that adjusts all the louvres together with a single touch. No hidden mechanism. No tiny screws to fail. Built to outlast the house.

Mortise & tenon joinery

Standard shutter frames are screwed at the corners — and screwed corners come loose and sag over time. Norman uses mortise and tenon joinery — the same joint used in heirloom furniture. The frame interlocks like a puzzle piece, glued and pressed under tension. It's about 6× stronger than a screwed corner, and it doesn't loosen with age.

Norman · Woodlore

Norman · Woodlore

The starting point of the Norman shutter range — a wood-and-composite hybrid panel that looks like solid timber, weighs less, and costs less than the premium hardwood ranges. Properly built, properly finished. The right answer for a young family's first plantation shutter install, or for rooms that don't need top-tier hardwood.

Norman · Woodlore Plus

Norman · Woodlore Plus

The same composite core as Woodlore but with substantially more colour and finish choices — over 50 standard colours plus custom matching. Stainable looks, painted looks, and a wider range of slat widths. The step up most customers take once they're choosing across a whole house.

Norman · Woodlore Plus Waterproof

Norman · Woodlore Plus Waterproof

Specifically engineered for wet areas — bathrooms, laundries, pool areas. Fully waterproof composite that handles steam, splashes, and humidity without warping, swelling, or staining. Looks identical to Woodlore Plus from a few feet away. The right answer for any room where moisture is part of life.

Norman · Brightwood

Norman · Brightwood

Solid hardwood panels in a composite frame — the best of both worlds. Real timber where you see and touch it, stable composite where it does its work. Heavier and more authentic in the hand, and finished to a higher standard than the Woodlore range. The middle ground between affordable and premium.

Norman · Normandy

Norman · Normandy

Norman's top-tier range — solid hardwood panels, solid hardwood frames, hand-finished with stained or painted surfaces that show the grain. This is the shutter you choose when you want the very best, when the house deserves it, and when you understand that real timber will outlast you. Often specified for heritage homes and luxury new builds.

Norman · Motorised shutters

Norman · Motorised shutters

Wireless tilt control with a remote, app, or voice. Solar-powered (small solar panel hides at the top of the frame), no electrician needed. Practical for high windows where a wand or cord would be awkward, and effortless for anyone wanting smart-home integration.

Norman · Honeycomb-backed shutters

Norman · Honeycomb-backed shutters

Plantation shutters with a honeycomb blockout cell built into the back of each panel — gives you the look of plantation shutters when open, and total blackout when closed. The right choice for bedrooms where light control matters as much as the aesthetic.
